The screams, yelled warning and the high pitch of the electronic alarms were quickly drifting away. I could still hear them, but everything felt as if it was happening in a distance. Thin at first, the film of fog in my mind grew, drowning more and more of the sounds.
"Abort, damn it! Abort! We're going to lose - "
The fog grew even thicker. I knew that the voices were important, but somehow couldn't bring myself to care.
"You have to try! Initiate op..."
It really didn't matter. The voices drifted further away and slowly merged into an indistinguishable ocean of sounds. I listened to it without emotion and nearly without interest.
Lights around me dimmed making the surrounding hazy and shapeless.
Shapes... there should have been shapes. I think there were shapes. I mean - before...
Darkness grew, filling the corners of my mind, working hand in hand with the fog. The sounds were no more than a distant whisper, a memory.
